Griffin's Multidock system charges and syncs up to 30 iPads at once

Don't you hate it when all of your iPads collectively run out of juice? Well, praise Griffin for announcing its first business centric iOS "accessory" in the shape of the Multidock. It has its own power connection for simultaneous charging of ten iPads, but it can be chain-linked to two other docks for syncing of up to 30 tablets with a single Mac. With each server-esque tower measuring up at 18.6 inches (47.2 cm) tall and priced even higher at $700, this one's for IT pros and Scrabble aficionados only.

Wood Charging Docks for iPad and iPad 2 from Miterbox

The Miterbox store on Etsy has a couple of hand-made wood charging stands that will work for iPad or iPad 2. The Retro TV iPad Dock (left) turns your device into the screen of a tiny, old-style TV console. The iPad slides in horizontally, leaving the docking connector free for charging while the iPad is displayed in the wood dock. The Retro TV dock is $60.00. The dock on the right has a wood support in the back to stabilize the iPad while it's attached to the Apple charging dock. It sells for $75.00.

iLuv's ArtStation Pro iPad speaker dock looks like a computer

When it comes to speaker docks for iOS devices, apart from a handful of really unique ones, they all pretty much look the same. iLuv's ArtStation Pro is looking to be one of those really unique ones as its design has made its pairing with the iPad truly something out of the ordinary.

The iLuv ArtStation Pro's are speaker systems with the iPad's being placed above the speaker, held in place with a rotating arm that will allow the iPad to be display horizontally or vertically. The combination of the speaker system and the rotating arm makes it look like a desktop computer, with the iPad as its display and it even comes with a matching optional Bluetooth keyboard and remote!

The ArtStation Pro system will be available in a choice of white/silver, or black silver and not to worry Android users, iLuv will also be coming out with a range of ArtStation Pro speaker docks for the Samsung Galaxy Tab series as well. No word on pricing or availability yet, but we're hoping it will be soon, for the sake of iPad users out there who can't wait to get their hands on these speaker docks.

Wooden iPhone/iPad Speakers

The iBamboo speaker is now officially funded over at Kickstarter, but in the event a hunk of bamboo in your living room clashes with your decor, head on over to etsy.com. The seller YellowGlueBlues has a shop full of wooden speakers with the similar concept of amplifying the iPhone's speaker through a hollow wooden base. His bases are made from maple, cherry, walnut, and spalted maple and finished with orange oil and wax. Since the speaker docks can be made to order, he can customize the opening in order to fit older models of the iPhone as well as the iPad. The prices range from $40 for a mini dock speaker (half the size of the speaker above and with a single opening) to $65 for an iPad-sized dock speaker.

JVC's UX-VJ3 and UX-VJ5 speaker docks play white host to iPad and iPhone

There's not much you can do to spice up speaker docks at this point — they're pretty much old hat. But what if that dock allowed you to plug in your iPad and iPhone, or iPod simultaneously? Ah, now we have your attention. Slated to hit the land that begot Kurosawa in mid-summer, the JVC UX-VJ3 and UX-VJ5 make their iOS connectivity a folie à deux. Sporting an AM / FM tuner, video out and a PC input, these sleek connectors don't appear to part much from the typical feature set. It's the VJ5 that's the real standout here, with its six apartment-blending color options, USB port and ability to rip MP3s from a built-in CD drive. Sound swanky enough for you? We thought so, but with no announcement on North American availability, lusting audiophiles on these shores have a bit of a wait ahead of them.

New iPad, iPhone and iPod universal Audio System unveiled by JVC Victor

If you're thinking that these are just more iPad/iPhone/iPod speaker docks, you would be wrong, because this is actually a CD player as well, that can double as an iPad/iPhone/iPod speaker dock. It was recently unveiled by JVC Victor and it is said to go on sale in Japan towards the end of July or early August, although no price has been mentioned.

Although the CD player is currently only available for the UX-VJ5 model, the UX-VJ3 features similar specs, minus the CD player of course, and both are said to be able to accommodate an iPad and an iPhone/iPod. Both devices are also said to feature Video Out, PC In, Audio In, an FM/AM Radio tuner, a 2x15W out put, as well as a USB port on the UX-VJ5, that is supposed to let you rip your CDs into MP3 format and then transferred to an external USB device, such as a flash drive or external hard disk.

We're not sure why anyone would need to dock an iPad and an iPhone/iPod at the same time. We're also guessing that when docked it would allow the device to charge, so perhaps it's just a convenient solution to charge two devices simultaneously. Other than that, we'll admit that they do look pretty sleek.

Hands-On: The SoundJaw Fixes the iPad 2's Awful Speaker

It would be hard to say anything good about the iPad 2's speaker. It is tinnier sounding than the surprisingly good speaker on the first iPad. It faces backwards, firing all sound away from you. It is far too easy to cover it with a hand or a Smart Cover and, worst of all, it is about the ugliest piece of design to come out of Apple since that stupid hockey-puck mouse that shipped back in 1998.

Luckily, there's a fix. It's called the SoundJaw, and it is a little plastic scoop that clips on to the bottom right corner of the iPad 2 and goes passively to work. The inventor, Matthew McLachlan, sent me one to test out.

Slip the SoundJaw onto the iPad and the transformation is dramatic. The widget scoops the sound from the rear-firing speaker and pushes it out of a small opening that looks like the return coin slot of an old-style payphone.

I showed it to The Lady and she said that it sounded “tinny.” This is true, but it's not actually making the sound any tinnier — flip the iPad over and listen to it naked and the tinniness is still there. The SoundJaw just makes it louder. In fact, it also works as a kind of horn speaker, amplifying the sound as well as bending it.

With music, the shortcomings in the iPad's speaker mean you probably still want to use an external speaker like the SuperTooth Disco. But for movies, games and general listening the SoundJaw is perfect. Dialog tracks that are indecipherable become loud and clear, and the sounds of grunting pigs and angry birds can't be muffled by a mis-placed hand.

I see no reason to ever take the SoundJaw off. The Smart Cover closes just fine, and some slip cases also work with the widget still attached. It might not work in folio-style cases, but those of you who encase your slim, lightweight tablet in a thick slab of padded plastic or leather are a lost cause anyway.

And if you have an iPad 1, don't bother. You can sort of jam the SoundJaw most of the way on, but it sticks out and makes no difference to the sound whatsoever.

$20, available now.

Acrylic Display Dock for the iPad 2

If you've been in an Apple store recently, you've seen that the old paper information signs for each product on display have been replaced. An iPad mounted in a sleek acrylic wedge now displays everything you'll need to know – and I'm sure using the iPad for the information is designed to pique your interest in one of those, too. Anyway, if you like the look of those acrylic stands, you'll be able to get one of your own from newPCgadgets. The iPad 2 Display Dock holds your device at a good angle for typing or for viewing your calendar, contacts, or a document while it's on your desk. It also incorporates an iPhone/iPod dock. It works as a charging stand for your devices, too. The iPad 2 Display Dock is available at newPCgadgets for $74.95.

iPad 2 Display Dock Looks Like The Ones At Apple Stores

If the above iPad and iPhone dock looks familiar it's because if you've ever been to Apple's stores then you would have recognized the dock to be almost the same one that is being used in-store. This dock however is created by New PC Gadgets and is made out of clear acrylic and features a slightly higher raised angle and provides an additional charging dock for your iPhone or iPod as well.

It does look pretty classy and for those looking to design their houses in a modern or minimalist settings, this display dock would be the perfect edition. The downside is that it holds no real practical use for most iPad users since the angle is still to low for those who are sitting down to view the contents on their iPad properly, and would require a standing position in order to look down onto their iPad.

However if you like the design (and we can't blame you, we like it too!) then just head on down to New PC Gadget's website to place your order. The dock will set you back $74.99.

JBL intros OnBeat iPad / iPhone / iPod speaker dock, prices it at $150

This planet we call home needs another iDock about as bad as we need another Charlie Sheen running around aimlessly, but no matter - we're getting one, and it's being delivered from JBL. The company has just outed its first-ever iPad speaker dock, the OnBeat. Truth be told, it's capable of handling iPod touches, iPhones and iPads (no word on the iPad 2), but it's clearly engineered to hold the largest of the bunch best. Aside from providing joints and jams to those situated in your living room (or basement, if that's how you roll), it can also pipe Netflix and YouTube content directly to one's television via a composite video output, and if you're running around sans an iDevice, the 3.5mm auxiliary jack ensures that any other source will still function just fine. You'll also be able to charge and sync any docked devices, but you'll be asked to dole out $149.95 in order to bring one home when it ships next month.
