Evernote Peek, an App for Your Smart Cover

The iPad Smart Cover is pretty smart, but the good folks at Evernote have come up with a way to make it even smarter. Evernote Peek is an app that is controlled by lifting the edge of the magnetic cover and — you guessed it — peeking underneath.

Peek lets you use any of your Evernote notebooks as study aids, although purpose-made notes work best. It works like this: Flip up the first section of the smart cover and you'll see a clue or a question. Use this to remember (or guess) the answer. To see if you're right, open the next section to reveal the answer. Then close the flap and open again to move onto the next question. You can also tap the checkbox to tell the app that you got it wrong and the next time around it'll show you the clues you messed up.

It's ingenious, and a great new take on flash-cards. Making the notes is easy too. The title of a not is the clue, and the body is the answer. That's it. Evernote recommends that you switch off auto-brightness on the iPad, and this is a good idea. If you don't, the Smart Cover blocks the light sensor and fools it into dimming the screen.

Once you have signed in, you also get access to a whole lot of notebooks in addition to your own. Cocktail recipes (easy), collective nouns (fun) and a periodic table quiz (nerdy) are my favorites, but there are lots more.

Peek is available now, and free.
